About this image

Excellent weather over the last few months has led to a good opportunity to follow Vesta to opposition, even though it's low in the sky and difficult with light pollution from the city - being just west of Saturn spanning the borders of Sgr & Oph.

Vesta peaked at visual magnitude 5.2 on June 16, with a 47d rise to maximum from mag 6.5 in April.  The decline to the same level - 6.5 mag - has taken 49d.

USNO A2 catalogue was used for comparison stars selected with a B-V of 0.6 or lower.
