Video astrometry of Near-Earth Object 2015 FP118

About this image

At last, a clear night to record this NEO which is in an Apollo-type orbit, classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid. The sky cleared but I had to wait a while because a few doors away new neighbours frequently have a bonfire in the evening and its debris wafts over my observatory. Under non-optimal conditions of unwanted particulates and an acrid burning smell I persevered and obtained video astrometry of this asteroid and comet 21P.

1-minute videos recorded with OccuRec and measured with Tangra gave the asteroid's sky motion to be 0.36"/sec, 0.13"/sec in RA and 0.33"/sec in Dec. Astrometric results were submitted to the MPC and they are also available on NEODyS.
