About this image

A view of the very thin crescent moon taken with a Nikon Coolpix P900 camera at near full zoom.  New moon was 2018 October 09 at 03.48 so the moon is exactly 38 hours old.  Normally the early waxing crescent moon is difficult to see from northern temperate latitudes in the autumn but the moon currently lies well north of the ecliptic which makes observation easier. Jupiter was also visible at almost the same altitude but some 15 degrees to the east.
