About this image
Image taken 1968.
In 1968 the telescope was updated lining the tube with cork sheeting, adding an extension to the tube in the hope of reducing thermals near the eyepiece end, and mounting it on a wheeled cart to facilitate transport outside for observing sessions. (The tube is affixed to the handle during moving.)
This is the configuration in which it remains today.
The mirror (in late 1961), was one of the first to be aluminised AND OVERCOATED here in Australia . The overcoating today is probably at least 80 percent as good as it was in 1961. I had my 16" Cave Observatory telescope re-aluminised and overcoated within months of starting observing in 1980 because it was deteriorating badly. (It had not been overcoated). When I sold it in August 2016, the overcoating meant that the mirror was still in very good condition, with just careful washing every couple of years. I can thoroughly recommend overcoating!
