About this image

Unexpectedly good conditions last night just as the skies started to darken, for 1000nm imaging of the night side of Venus- the atmosphere being transparent at these wavelength allowing a view of the hot surface of the planet.

This is a Winjupos combination of 18.9mins accumulated exposure with 1000nm Edmunds filter (25nm bandwidth) with an increase to 200msec exposures following very helpful advice and discussions with Anthony Wesley and Phil Miles. All at prime focus on my f4.4, 444mm Dobsonian

A number of dark patches can be seen on the night side of Venus which can day to day be seen rotating slowly with the planet and so are confirmed as real features- most likely higher elevation features which are subsequently cooler.
