About this image

Given everything that it has been through I think we can finally say that C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) is now nearly D/2019 Y4. After a brief outburst on May 8 and the breakup of its remaining nucleus the comet has been fading and last night all that was left was two streams of debris. This image was taken with my telescope half looking at my observatory shed roof and with a very bright sky.

RIP ATLAS. I have known him well for the last few months. I feel a wake is in order.

This comet even got a mention on the lockdown The Sky at Night 800th episode. I was initially sceptical, but Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Chris Lintott have proven to be excellent lead presenters for the programme.
