In the October 2020 issue of JBAA, Callum Potter suggested that we to try to image the globular cluster Balbinot 1 in Pegasus. The cluster is very sparse with at most 100 members yet known and very faint, with an integrated magnitude of only 16.3 and all its members are fainter than magnitude 18. The discovery and classification is published at https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0004-637X/767/2/101/pdf. The finder chart above is taken from that paper; stars down to g=25 or so are displayed.

The colour image is from the SDSS9. It only goes to mag 20.5 or so and very clearly demonstrates how unimpressive is this GC.

My image also goes to an estimated g=20.5 but I have not yet performed precision photometry on it.

The sky conditions were relatively poor with dust and turbulence from a calima which began late yesterday. That explains why the star images are not as sharp, nor the limiting magnitude as low, as I would have liked. On a good night the stars would be half the diameter and visible to half a magnitude fainter.
