The Leonids have put on a moderate display this year and some observers were fortunate to see or record a Leonid fireball. A number of other showers are under way this month, including the alpha Monocerotids (AMO), some of which head towards Leo. They usually produce low ZHRs, but last year in the early hours of November 22 we recorded a brief increase in their rates.

This is a composite image of a nice mag 0 AMO, hurtling into the Sickle. After years of familiarity with constellations something tells us that the pattern isn't right, and in this case there's an interloper under the start of the meteor's trail and to the right of Regulus. It's R Leonis, the red giant Mira-type variable star, near maximum brightness. (The red sensitivity of the sensor has enhanced its visibility).
