Mare Imbrium lava flow, 22nd March 2021

About this image

A region very close to the terminator in Mare Imbrium. The glancing illumination reveals a shallow lava flow, extending from the lower left and passing just below the small craterlet at the upper centre (Le Verrier A). The vertical relief of this feature is only about 30 metres, according to cross-sectional profiles measured on LROC Quickmap. At high Sun angles, some of these flows appear slightly darker than the surrounding mare, but the relief is only detectable when the terminator is very close by.
