Proclus at high Sun angle, 24th March 2021

About this image

Proclus is a relatively young crater with a very bright interior. Imaging at high Sun required a short exposure to bring out detail in the interior without saturating the image. This is an excellent example of an oblique impact with a "butterfly" ejecta pattern and a zone of avoidance in the direction from which the impactor arrived (in this case the southwest: lower left in this image) where there is no ejecta. The greyish diamond shape of Palus Somni was originally considered as a separate region, rather than highland material that did not have light-toned ejecta blanketing it.
