About this image

A brief exposure of this distant object as I was running out of darkness. Bortle 7/8, light cloud, no Moon.

Known as 'The Intergalactic Wanderer' because of its extreme distance from the solar system, it is now known to be part of our galaxy, taking 3billion years to complete one orbit of the galactic centre. It is also extremely old!

Discovered by William Herschel in December 1788. Distance c.300,000ly. Diameter c.128ly. Age c.12.3billion years.
