About this image

This interesting spiral galaxy was discovered by Edward Pigott in March 1779, though Pigott seems to be be better remembered for his variable star work and for the comet that was named after him. The galaxy has inner and outer disks that rotate in opposite directions! This may be a result of the absorption of a satellite galaxy. Distance c.24million ly. Diameter c.70,000 ly.

Bortle 7/8, light cloud.
