About this image

Discovered by William Herschel in February 1787, this lenticular galaxy lies in Sextans at a distance of c.32million ly. The substantial central bulge and absence of a dark lateral dust lane are particularly noticeable. The galaxy is home to a supermassive black hole with a mass of c.2billion solar masses. Apparent mag. 9.9.
