About this image

Discovered by William Herschel in April 1785, this weakly barred spiral galaxy lies at a distance c.27million ly.  This image shows the nucleus and central disk with faint traces of the extensive spiral arms. Although not evident here, these multiple, loose arms extend as far as the star beyond the pair to the right of the central disk. Worth a longer exposure next time. Apparent mag. 10.5.
