About this image

This magnificent spiral galaxy, notable for its large central bulge, was discovered by Pierre Méchain in May 1781. It is believed to host a gigantic supermassive black hole of about 1billion solar masses, and 1-2,000 globular clusters. Plenty there to keep astronomers on the Sombrero's planets happy.

Distance c.29million ly. Diameter c.50,000ly.

Moon waxing gibbous, 13 days old, 98% illuminated. A pleasing image given the conditions.
