About this image

Seen edge-on, this barred spiral galaxy is a member of the Virgo Cluster and is interacting with NGC5740. It was discovered by William Herschel in February 1786.

This image shows the rectangular-shaped 'box' which appears to be the bar seen end-on.

NGC5746 lies c.95million ly distant. Diameter c.170,000ly. Apparent mag. 11.0.

Bortle 7/8. Moon waxing gibbous 98% illuminated.
