Title

NGC2146 Barred Spiral Galaxy in Camelopardalis - wider field view

About this image

A wider field view of this barred spiral galaxy located in Camelopardalis. It is also known as the Dusty Hand Galaxy, seemingly a reference to the shape of the dust lanes. It was discovered in 1876 by Friedrich Winnecke (1835-97). The disk is 'warped', probably as a result of interaction or merger with another galaxy. In this image the nucleus seems brighter and less obscured by dust than in some other images.

Distance c.70million ly. Diameter c.80,000ly. Apparent mag.11.0.

Moon waxing gibbous, 13 days old, 98% illuminated.
