About this image

Also known as the  Hamburger Galaxy, NGC3628 is a spiral galaxy located in Leo at a distance of c.35million ly. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1784, and belongs to the Leo Triplet of galaxies together with M65 and M66. This galaxy, however, was not detected by Messier.

Apparent mag. 10.2  Diameter c.100,000ly.

Well seen in this image is the thick dust lane and the hazy areas that extend beyond the ends of the visible disk, especially at lower left. The rectangular box-like central bulge may indicate a bar seen end on (cf NGC5746).
