NGC4449 Dwarf Irregular Galaxy in Canes Venatici

About this image

This dwarf irregular galaxy in Canes Venatici was discovered by William Herschel in Apr 1788. Sometimes known as the Box Galaxy, at c.20,000 ly across it is substantially smaller than the Milky Way. The image shows a bright central area with mottling in the body of the galaxy, and various strands of stars. Two larger strands (to the left) have been likened to the claws of a lobster and a possible designation as the Lobster Galaxy.

Distance c.13million ly. Apparent mag. c.9.4.

Bortle 7/8, light cloud, no Moon.
