About this image

This spiral galaxy was discovered by Charles Messier in March 1781. It is a member of the Virgo cluster. This image shows a bright central nucleus surrounded by a mottled disk and a diffuse outer region with arms not clearly distinguishable.

Distance c.59million ly. Diameter c.165,000 ly. Apparent mag. 10.26.

Bortle 7/8, Moon waning crescent 1%.
