Supernova 2022hrs in NGC4647

About this image

This Supernova known as SN 2022hrs was discovered recently by an amateur astronomer Mr Koichi Itagaki on 16th April this year. It is in a spiral galaxy known as NGC4647, which is about 63 million light years from us, the supernova is brighter than its host galaxy.

Integration time was 5hrs 20mins. Captured between 4th to 8th May22.

It’s the first time I have imaged a supernova that is at the bring of its life. This one has special meaning for me – it was discovered exactly 2 years to the day after my father suddenly passed away. I’m a pragmatic scientist and not given to flights of fancy but I do feel closer to dad just by imaging this target and making sure I now have an image of a bright spark in the universe that was found exactly two years after his light on Earth went out…..

Processing; Deep sky stacker, PixInsight with final tweaks in Photoshop + Topaz DeNoise

Clear skies all.

Excellent! That's a lot of exposure and it clearly paid off. A lovely story behind it too - no doubt your dad would be proud.

Thanks so much Philip for your kind words. Yeap, I wanted to make sure I got a nice image to have as a memory :)
