About this image

This comet is just about to cross the celestial equator moving south and it brightness increase is slowing. It will probably peak around 8.5 and is currently around 9.0. There has been strong jet activity in a PA of around 100 deg for a while and this is shown in the inset which is a x2 rescaled Larson-Sekanina filter. The main, broad tail to the north is the dust tail which is in the plane of the comet's orbit and is strongly curved near the comet. This is why the brightest part of the coma is not in the centre. There is a very faint ion tail in PA 145 (approx SE) which is in the anti-solar direction. This is not shown in this image but it is visible in Mazin's excellent image here.
