About this image

The open cluster (NGC6611) was discovered by Jean-Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745-46. Messier discovered the Eagle Nebula (IC4703) in June 1764. The nebula - a magnificent spectacle - is home to the 'Pillars of Creation'.

Distance c.7,000ly. Age c. 5.5million years. Dimensions: nebula 70x55ly, cluster 15ly.

Bortle 7/8. Moon waxing gibbous 88% 11 days old, but low in the SW. Thin high cloud.
