About this image

This large, densely-packed (Class II) globular cluster was discovered by Italian-born Jean-Dominique Maraldi in September 1746. In the same year he also discovered M15, another globular cluster, in Pegasus. He thought both objects were 'nebulous stars'.

This image shows an intensely bright unresolved core embedded in an unevenly scattered halo of stars - a striking sight.

Distance c.37,500ly. Diameter c.175lys. Age c.13billion yrs.

Bortle 7/8. Moon waxing gibbous 99% 14 days old, but low in the S and conveniently - for once - partially hidden by trees.
