NGC6894 Planetary Nebula in Cygnus

About this image

This attractive planetary nebula - well named the Diamond Ring Nebula - was discovered by William Herschel in July 1784. As the subject of the Deep Sky Section's 'Observers' Forum' in the 2022 August Journal, I decided to seek it out. This image clearly shows the 'diamond' in the ring.

Apparent diameter 42". Apparent mag. 12.3. Distance c.5,000ly.

Bortle 7/8, Moon waxing gibbous 93%, 12 days old, low in SW, high cloud.

Well done with this one Alan as it is a buggy one in the Unistellar app (reported) - also known as the Diamond Ring Nebula.

  • NGC 6781 still shows as Little Ring Nebula which is wrong as it is the Snowball Nebula. The Little Ring Nebula is actually NGC 6894 which sadly is not in the Unistellar app catalog and hence need to enter it with manual coordinates.

Thanks Mark. Yes, I used the RA and Dec to find it and had a good visual reference from the Journal article. There are other slightly puzzling omissions from the Uni database, e g  NGC6910, also in Cygnus, while they include lots of obscure (to me) asteroids.
