About this image

The Barnard E is named after Edward Emerson Barnard an astronomer at the Lick observatory. The Barnard E and can be seen in photographs taken by Barnard in "Publications of the Lick Observatory Vol XI" and also in his more famous book "A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way". It's an area of dust which obscures the starlight behind.
