About this image

This visually large spiral galaxy was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783. Its southern location makes it a difficult object for observers in more northerly UK latitudes.

This image, using the COAST in Tenerife, shows a bright central nucleus surrounded by a diffuse, irregular disk laced with dark dust lanes. Two spiral arms can be faintly discerned, one curving in from far upper left, the other emanating from near centre-left curving to the right. A splendid object!

Diameter c.90,000ly. Long axis 28'. Distance c.11.4million ly. Apparent mag 8.0.
