About this image

Var 1, or "M31 V0619" as it is now more widely called, is one of the most important stars in the history of astronomy. Hubble discovered that it is a Cepheid variable in the Andromeda galaxy, M31, and so was able to prove beyond doubt that it lay well outside the bounds of our galaxy.

It lies in a glorious part of the galaxy which is stuffed full of open clusters, star clouds, emission nebulae, dust lanes, and globular clusters. The bright "star" immediately to the south of the prominent H-II region, itself to the southwest of Var 1, is actually a GC named B020D-G089 with a magnitude of 17.55. Several other GCs are visible if you know where to look.
