About this image

This tricky little planetary nebula is the Deep Sky Section's 'Object of Interest' for September 2022. It was discovered in July 1873 by the American astronomer, Sherburne Burnham.

With a size of less than 1.0', an apparent magnitude of 10.9, and in the proximity of a bright star, it proved difficult to see much - if any - detail, especially with a full Moon. But this cropped image does show the loosely rectangular, butterfly-like shape of the nebula, the bright central area contrasting with the fainter 'wings'.

Distance c.6,000ly.

Bortle 7/8, Moon full 100%, 15days old.
