About this image

This could well be one the last of the satellites in the outer solar system which I am capable of imaging. It was magnitude V=22.4 at the time of observation. I knew there was no chance of picking up a trail so I stacked subs as they came in until the limiting stellar magnitude was around 22.5. The three hours of data were then stacked on the predicted motion of the satellite. Taygete is present, but only just. Not too bad for a lump of dark coloured rock only 5km across.

Wow. Thats faint. What SNR is that detection?

Circa 3-5 I guess.  I should try to measure it.

If anyone else want to have a go, it is significantly brighter on the day of opposition, 26 September, and the moon is new. Optimal conditions, in other words. Predicted brightness is then 22.0 and 0.4 magnitudes makes a big difference when an object is at the limit of detectability.

Wow! This is incredible!
