About this image

This galaxy in Lacerta was discovered by William Herschel in Nov 1790.

This image shows the galaxy as an asymmetric object with a bright nucleus with faint extensions to NW and SE, the former being larger and with a brighter area at the NW extension's edge. This was once thought to be a separate galaxy, but is now regarded as a massive star-forming region within the galaxy. The galaxy has been described as both an irregular and a loose spiral.

Distance c.64million ly. Size c.25,000ly. Apparent mag 13.10.

Bortle 7/8. Moon full 100%, 15days old.
