NGC129 Open Cluster in Cassiopeia
About this image
This loose open cluster in Cassiopeia was discovered by William Herschel in 1788. It is set in a rich star field and it is difficult to be sure which stars are and are not members of the cluster. It took me several attempts before I was sure I had located the correct position.
The most obvious feature is the triangle of mag. 8/9 stars at the centre of this image. The star at the top of the triangle (DL Cas) is a binary system containing a Cepheid used to compute the distance of the cluster (not by me, I hasten to add). The pair of bright orange stars at lower left (HD236449, HD236446) are both class K stars. The bright star at lower right (HD2626) is a mag. 5.9 class B star.
Distance c.6,600ly. Age c.76million ly.
Useful reference material for NGC129 can be found at https://www.starobserver.eu/articles/ngc129/ This cluster is actually much more interesting than it first appears.
Bortle 7/8. No Moon.
