Tennyson's description of the Pleiades: "Glitter like a swarm of fire-flies tangled in a silver braid" was written some 17 years before the actual discovery of the nebulosity by Wilhelm Tempel in 1859. Was it just a fortuitous description, or did Tennyson know of it before the reported discovery?
