About this image

An image using COAST (limited to 3min exposure) of this intermediate spiral galaxy in Eridanus. It was discovered by William Herschel in October 1784. The unusual shape and dispersion of the arms is thought to be due to interaction with NGC1232A, which can be seen faintly to the upper right of the galaxy.

Distance c.61million ly. Diameter c.200,000ly. Apparent mag. 10.1. Apparent size 7.4' x 6.5'.
