About this image

IC10 is an irregular dwarf galaxy, around 2.5 mly away and a member of the local group. It is thought to belong to the M31 subgroup. Despite its small size of 5000 ly across, smaller than the Small Magellanic Cloud, it is an active starburst galaxy.

I was intrigued by a recent image of this galaxy posted here and decided to have a look for myself. It is difficult to observe because it lies in the plane of the Milky Way and is obscured by interstellar matter. It shows as just a smudge on single exposures. I wasn't sure how this image would turn out as a high thin cloud disturbed guiding, and I had to delete around a third of the gathered data. However, the result is quite pleasing, and I remain impressed with what the ASI 294 camera can produce in a relatively short time.
