About this image

This COAST image shows the spiral galaxies NGC627 (centre) with the fainter IC1727 to the upper left. A number of other small, faint, unidentified galaxies (?) can be seen.

NGC627 was discovered by William Herschel in October 1786. It is an 11th mag. spiral galaxy, about 20million ly distant. The galaxy is shown as having a relatively bright, central disk with some signs of structure, embedded in a larger, diffuse, faint disk with a few brighter concentrations.

IC1727 was discovered by Issac Roberts in November 1896 by photography, using his 20" reflector. It is also a spiral galaxy, apparent mag. 11.5, and lies 'close' to NGC627 at a distance of c.90,000ly. The image shows this galaxy as little more than a faint streak with some hints of brighter spots.

Both galaxies appear to be edge-on or nearly so.
