20221030_033419 - a bright southern Taurid meteor

About this image

The northern and southern Taurids usually deliver low rates throughout the autumn months with few really bright meteors. However, the IMO alerted observers that 2022 could be a 'swarm year', where meteoroid clustering could give an increase in activity, with larger bodies producing fireballs.

They are putting on a good show this year and we are also detecting some fireball-class Taurids. The variable cloud cover has often hindered a good view of them, but this mag -1.6 southern Taurid was recorded during a clear interval. Its light curve displays a distinctive shape with a sudden increase in brightness shortly before its decline. Some others end in a bright terminal flash.
