Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte Galaxy

About this image

WLM is an outlying member of the Local Group of galaxies, about 930 kpc away. It's a barred irregular, somewhat similar to the SMC and a little larger. Although of 11th magnitude, it has a fairly low surface brightness and the contrast stretching applied here brings out not only the galaxy but also the sky noise. WLM is so large that it only just fits in a single frame of my camera. It has one known globular cluster which lies beyond the right edge of the image; I may try to image it this coming season.
