About this image

This rich open cluster (class III1r) in Orion is the Deep Sky Section's 'Object of Interest' for December. It was discovered by William Herschel in February 1784 on a night that was hopefully warmer than last night's -5˚C. Fortunately, I was indoors while the Unistellar made its recording of this image.

Distance c.10,000ly. Apparent mag. 8.5. Age c.330-550 million years.

Bortle 7/8. Cold!
