Title

Amazing ion tail for E3

About this image

I have switched from Quattro 8 to Esprit 100ED telescope to have a wider field, the ion tail is now extending well beyond the 2° field of my camera.

My roughly-estimated length of the ion tail is 3.5 million miles.

Processing took some time, had to separate the comet from the stars, process them separately then combine them back into the final image.

Martin I know this image has been heavily processed but can you tell me if the red rays which seem to be eminating from the dust tail are real (were they visible in the subs?) or are they an artifact of the processing. A fine image nontheless showing the comet at its best.

Hi Denis, it's an artefact due to star trails not fully removed when isolating the comet.

Thanks Mazin for the explanation The only other reason I could think of was that we were seeing synchronic bands appearing in the dust tail, but I am not sure if the viewing geometry would be favourable. I may be talking rubbish though! Denis. PS can you consider copying your comet images to cometobs@britasto.org for the Comet Section Archive., thanks.
