Mountains of Eternal Light?

About this image

A fine view of the mountains near the Moon's south pole, despite poor seeing and gusty winds. Once described as the 'mountains of eternal light', it was for a time thought that the Sun never set on these peaks. Ewen Whitaker, a past Director of the BAA Lunar Section, demonstrated that this was not the case and his chart of the area, originally drawn in the 1950s, is reproduced in the Lunar Section Circular for February 2023. South is up in this image to facilitate comparison with Whitaker's map.
