About this image

NGC2301, the 'Great Bird Cluster' in Monoceros, was discovered by William Herschel in December 1786. 

It may take a leap of imagination to see the bird, but in this COAST image I see the body (centre) with the tail (left) and the wings stretching vertically above and below.

Distance c.2,840ly  Age c.165million ly. Apparent mag. 6.0.
