About this image

Messier 48 is an open cluster in Hydra - discovery credit goes to Caroline Herschel (Messier's catalogue listed no open cluster at the coordinates he gave; he had the same RA, but was 5 degrees off in Dec).

This otherwise appears as a remarkably barren area of sky - there are a smattering of PGC catalogue galaxies through the field, but most are faint, and the majority very small. On DSS plates, there appears to be some IFN to the south (left on image) of the cluster, but it is only just obvious with an extreme stretch, and then near brighter stars so not immediately obvious! (There is more further south that's perhaps more apparent, but off frame).
