About this image

This interesting ring galaxy in Leo Minor was discovered by William Herschel in March 1786.

The weather here has been so poor recently that I have been relying on the COAST in Tenerife to supply me with something worthwhile. This image certainly fits the bill. A large, bright circular nucleus is embedded in a disk with a broad, near-vertical bar reaching almost to the disk's edge. A much larger and much fainter broad ring is separated from the inner disk by an unevenly delineated dark lane. The galaxy appears to be a product of an intergalactic merger.

Distance c,75million ly. Diameter c.94,000ly. Apparent mag. 11.8.
