The M81 Group over 3-Years

About this image

Three of the M81 group galaxies including the M81 irregular satellite galaxy UGC5336 or Holmberg IX.  This is a 2-panel mosaic with a total integration time of 32.5 hours.  Sub-frames have been taken in January, February and March of 2021, 2022 and 2023.  The Cornish weather makes collecting long exposures tricky.  The answer is to be patient and collect more data each year and build up the image.

The majority of light sub-frames were taken using an Optolong L-Pro filter for the broad RGB images.  Optolong L-eNhance and L-eXtreme filters were also used, particularly with M82, to emphasise the hydrogen-alpha emission regions of the galaxies.

All calibration, integration, processing and mosaic building was completed with PixInsight.
