About this image

I just took a snapshot of this much hyped object via itel Siding Spring.

The BBC describe it as a 'MASSIVE asteroid' (they've clearly never heard of Ceres) but have not yet calculated the giraffe-equivalent mass.....

This is a 180 sec exposure with it travelling at approx 219"/minute.

Is Ceres still an asteroid?  I really don't know the answer now that Pluto is no longer a planet.

Nice image though. It looks more like a meteorite or an artificial satellite, it's moving so fast.

Ceres is categorised as a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt, although check the literature about whether it meets all the requirements to be a dwarf planet.
