Title

Hydrogen Beta spectroheliogram 27th March 2023

About this image

Using 16x sidereal speed to force the scan I recorded a 16 bit SER file in Sharpcap, after reconstruction carried out minimal sharpening,brightness/gamma levels on this single scan image (no stacking) flipped and rotated to correct orientation. Scope was reduced to 40mm by my not remembering to remove the aperture mask from the front of the scope after looking at the CaK line. Lot of cloud had drifted in as the afternoon drew on and the seeing was unsteady.

That's the first time I have seen a solar image in H beta. (Thanks to the spectroheliograph) Can it reveal anything different compared with H alpha ?

That's a really nice result Alun and it is clearly a very nice instrument. BUT, the image above is the result of the skill and imagination of the observer.  Skill to build the equipment and master the image processing to give such a clear image.  And the imagination to say, what if?

Excellent work!

Mike.

Hello Robin, Prominence's show up much the same in both wavelengths but surface features are quite different. Managed to run a few scans off in between the clouds earlier today (30th) in both Hbeta and Halpha so will post a comparison image set later.

Hello Mike,Thank you, must admit I didn't build the Sol'Ex itself as I don't have access to a 3D printer (yet!). I ordered the Sol'Ex + a few accessories  from Azure3D based in France, all I did was insert the optics and grating which I ordered from Shelyak and recently upgraded the slit from the original 10um to a 9um quartz slit. Being able to image the Sun in any wavelength of the spectrum is enjoyable and addictive and as to mastering the processing I just put that down to pure luck :))
