M96 Intermediate Spiral Galaxy in Leo

About this image

This intermediate spiral galaxy in Leo was discovered by Pierre Méchain in March 1781. It is the largest member of the M96 group which includes M95, M105 and a number of other galaxies. Its structure is believed to have been influenced by interaction with NGC3384 about one billion years ago, though the galaxies are now separated by about 40 million light years.

This image shows a bright oblate nucleus set in a disk with some dark patches at upper right and irregular whispy arms, more prominent to the south.

Distance c.31million ly. Diameter c.100,000ly. Apparent mag. 10.1.
