About this image

This near edge-on spiral galaxy in Ursa Major is a member of the M109 group. It was discovered by William Herschel in February 1788.

This image shows a small, bright nucleus embedded in an irregular elliptical disk, somewhat mottled with a brighter central area. The bright star is mag. 4 Chi UM. This and a near-full Moon meant conditions not ideal (are they ever?).

Distance c.50.5million ly. Apparent mag. 11.0.

Moon 12 days old, waxing gibbous 90%.
