About this image

This interesting intermediate spiral galaxy in Ursa Major was discovered by William Herschel in February 1788. It is a much-studied Seyfert galaxy with a supermassive black hole at its centre.

The image shows a bright central core set in a broad S-shaped bar, with faint indications of the arms and disk. Well worth further examination.

Distance c.54.14million ly. Size c.78,800ly. Apparent mag. 12.9.

Moon 13 days waxing gibbous 95%. Light cloud.
